How to Keep Your Garage Safe While You’re on Vacation

You deserve a break! Don't let worrying about your home's safety ruin your vacation.
You deserve a break! Don't let worrying about your home's safety ruin your vacation.

Here are some simple steps to help keep your garage and garage door secure while you’re away:

1. Unplug Your Garage Door Opener

If you won’t be using it, disconnect the automatic opener. This prevents remote access and eliminates the risk of someone using a hacked opener code to get in.

2. Lock the Manual Release

Most garage doors have a manual release cord, typically red, that allows the door to be opened during a power outage. Use a zip tie or lock to secure it so intruders can’t trip it from outside.

3. Install a Garage Door Lock

For added protection, consider installing a manual slide lock or deadbolt on the inside of the door. This creates a strong physical barrier while you're away.

4. Don’t Leave a Remote in Your Car

Especially if you're leaving a car in the driveway. A garage door remote left in plain sight can be a quick way for someone to access your garage.

5. Use Smart Technology

A smart garage door opener can send alerts to your phone and allow you to monitor activity while you're away. Some even let you check if the door is closed, or close it remotely if you forgot.

6. Ask a Neighbor to Keep an Eye Out

Let a trusted neighbor know you’ll be gone. They can report any unusual activity and even bring in mail or packages to reduce the appearance of an empty home.

At Ramirez Garage Door, we want you to enjoy your time away without worrying about what’s happening back home. If you need help upgrading your opener or checking the safety of your door before you go, give us a call. Safe travels!
